Packaged Food Sales On The Rise

Growing confidence and seasonality boost consumption.

In the April update of the monthly observations from market analyst IRi for TUTTOFOOD, growth rates appear to be distributed across almost all the different areas of the commodity market. Throughout the previous year, the commodity market as a whole reached a value of 15,101m EUR (+3.6%), with an increase of +14.2% in the month of April alone. The organic sector has registered sales of about 479m EUR since the beginning of the year, which translates into +15.8%, compared with the previous year. Packed meat has been the best-performing more ‘traditional’ food product, with an increase of +9.9% and sales of 210 million euros, thereby re-confirming, on the one hand that Italians do not give in to alarmism very easily, and, on the other that they are returning to purchase what had always been considered a luxury product. This being said, the monthly figures for holiday-related items reveal that sales have increased by over thirtyfold, approaching the 300m EUR threshold - a figure that suggests renewed consumer confidence. Beverage sales increased by 1.9% (612m EUR) over the previous twelve month, with an increase of 4.3% (243m EUR) in the month of March alone.
